If I could, I would give this book 6 stars. This calculation workbook has some of the most difficult calculation exercises I've ever experienced. However after completing the book, the depth of my understanding & calculation ability increased exponentially. I see tactics in Super Grandmaster games, watching them on TV. I never imagined at the start of my chess journey that would be possible. Shankland has a gift for chess, but his humor & approach is refreshing. He doesn't just copy & paste computer lines, he calculates and you will likewise, if you work through this book. This is the hardest tactics workbook I've encountered to date. But I fully enjoyed every exercise & his explanations.
I pre-ordered the sequel to this book Grandmaster Calculation 2, the first day pre-orders were excepted. That's as good as endorsement I can give.
If Aagaard's Calculation book is a 7, on 1 to 10 scale of difficulty, this book is a 9. Shankland is a super grandmaster picking through super grandmaster positions. His challenge at the beginning of the book is 70% correctness, I accomplished 35%. Positions answered with complete & correct lines.(counting just 1st or 2nd move correctness, which I do not, I was closer to 70%) Its hard not impossible.
I completed 5 positions per day sometimes 6. During the recent Olympiad I was able to "guess the move", Watching Hans Niemann, Fabiano Caruana & Wesley So games. Even calculating variations & wins etc.. If you want to learn board vision & tactical ideas, this book is a must.
