Two Knights Save the Day: A World Champion’s Favorite Studies
Sergei Tkachenko
I'm around 1600 rapid on chess.com and got 73% of the puzzles right. Lowest chapter score was 50% and highest 100%. There are 313 total puzzles in the book. Mostly sorted by theme. Last 66 puzzles are in the "Mix" section without hints or theme.
Pro:
- The themes are well explained in each chapter
- The puzzles are well selected
- Great solutions with explanations about sidelines/variations etc.
Con:
- I think the difficulty of the puzzles varies quite a bit. There are some one-movers and then the next puzzles has a trapped rook in one variation 3 or 4 moves deep. I find the book a little inconsistent in that sense. In the suggested rating range i think we would still profit off of tactics that straightforward win a piece or deliver checkmate.
Bottom Line: If you're already 1400 and had a puzzle book in your life, i think you can go for it. If you're lower rated I would do 1 or 2 easier Puzzle Books (1001 Endgame Exercises for Beginners or my 1st Chess Workbook (haven't read the second one)). I'm gonna revisit the book when I'm (hopefully) higher rated at some point, because i do believe it would still be good training material for 1800s.
Good examples of real games, separated by themes. I use it in my classes with intermediate students. The most difficult exercises are aprox my level (1800 fide)
