Now this is a record. The longest chess game ever played was Ivan Nikolic – Goran Arsovic played in Belgrade in 1989. It lasted for incredible 269 moves! It ended in a draw. Nikolić took black’s last pawn on move 167, and it was a rook and bishop versus rook endgame. Arsovic could have claimed a draw by 50-move rule on move 217. He did not. Perhaps the rules were different at that event? In any case, here is a very instructive endgame position they reached 200 moves before the end. White has a bishop for a pawn on move 68. How would you evaluate the position? Nikolić ended up drawing. Could you win with white?
