Edgard Colle – Caissa's Wounded Warrior
Taylor Kingston
I was excited to learn from this book, but I was completely disappointed to find it's written in old descriptive chess notation (P-K4, etc.). As a recent player, I’ve only ever learned algebraic notation (e4, Nf3), and trying to decipher every single move is incredibly stressful and slow. It completely kills the flow of learning. I can’t even use the book. This should be clearly stated in the description.
The Most Instructive Games of Chess Every Played is a timeless classic. Irving Chernev has masterfully annotated 62 games. He illustrates fundamental strategies and concepts through the games of Capablanca, Tarrasch, Fischer, Alekhine, Lasker... ect. His writing style is easily digestible and informative which leads me to suggest the target elo being 1100-1200. To address the naysayer of the book, it was written pre-engine era and would have the usual criticism of modern masters looking at dated opening/analysis. Despite this, I have taught using these games on many occasions. I will now list a few books that fit a similar rating bracket and role. At 1000-1100 elo I have “Logical Chess Move by Move” also by Irving Chernev. At under 1000 elo “The First Book of Morphy” by Frisco Del Rosario which I gave 3 stars.
